A moment of fame for a Suffolk man came at a country music concert in Virginia Beach on Friday when musician Luke Bryan called Jason Fawcett up to the stage.

The audience of tens of thousands at Farm Bureau Live at Virginia Beach amphitheater was treated to Fawcett letting his hair down on stage with Bryan, an award-winning country artist whose popular songs include “I Don’t Want This Night to End,” “Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye” and “Drunk on You.”

Fawcett, the son of City Councilman Roger Fawcett, attended the show with his wife and some friends and employees from his business, Elizabeth River Lawn and Landscape. They had tickets for the orchestra pit, which put them near the stage. But none of them expected Fawcett to become part of the performance.

“During his encore, he was looking for somebody during a particular song to come up and shake it,” Fawcett said Monday.

Bryan picked him out from the audience and dragged him onstage.

“Girls, I think y’all want to see a country boy shake it,” Bryan called out.

Bryan asked Fawcett where he was from, to which Fawcett replied, “Suffolk, Va.”

He then egged Fawcett on with lines of “Country boy, shake it,” and “Go Jason.”

“I just kind of let it loose,” Fawcett said Monday. He reported he was thinking, “I’m up here. I need to make the best of it and I guess put on the best show I could put on.”

Bryan praised the performance, saying Fawcett was double-jointed and needed to tour with him.

“Jason just showed [me] up,” Bryan said on stage.

He then invited Fawcett to hang out backstage with him, which he did — until 3:30 a.m.

Fawcett and his business may also have gotten some work out of the deal.

Bryan told Fawcett he had just bought 16,000 acres south of Nashville and had acquired trees for the property. He invited Fawcett and his business to come plant the trees and also offered him free tickets to any of his shows in the future.

Fawcett said Bryan even remembered him from when they met after a show a couple years ago, when Bryan signed some Elizabeth River Lawn and Landscape shirts for him.

“It was one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences,” Fawcett said Monday. “My wife had a great time, and the people that were with us had a great time. We don’t get to let our hair down much.”

Fawcett said he proudly announced from the stage he was from Suffolk because he loves Suffolk.

“I wanted to make sure Suffolk stood out from the crowd,” he said.
