Stephen D. Carnes Jr., 88, died March 29, 2011, in the Nansemond Pointe Nursing Facility.

Born in Norfolk, he was the son of the late Stephen D. and Gladys Carnes. He moved to Suffolk at age 6 and lived all of his life therein.

Mr. Carnes was an alumnus of The University of Virginia, where he was a DuPont scholar.

He served in the U.S. Navy, detached to the Marine Corps in World War II from March 1942 until January 1946. He participated in the invasion and occupation of Okinawa.

He was a member of Oxford United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a niece, Jennie Jones Harpold, of Newland, N.C., and two cousins, Marcella Oliver Powell, of Norfolk, and Dr. L.M. Carnes, of Statesboro, Ga.

A graveside funeral will be held on Friday, April 1, 2011, at 2 p.m. in Holly Lawn Cemetery by the Rev. Edward C. Johnson and Ken Hanson. Memorial donations can be made to a memorial of one’s choice.
