Former Bulldog leads Keydet sprinters

VMI senior James Alexander (King’s Fork) started his outdoor track season with a first- and third-place finish as the Keydets and next-door neighbor Washington and Lee hosted a meet in Lexington Saturday.

Alexander won the 200-meter dash in 22.15 seconds and placed third in the 100 in 11.05.

Alexander finished second in the Big South Conference in the 200 at the conference’s indoor championships in February.

Chowan’s softball squad is riding a 10-game winning streak after easily sweeping conference foe Virginia Union Tuesday in Richmond.

The Lady Hawks (23-15, 13-1 CIAA) rolled to wins of 12-2 and 15-1. In game one, senior outfielder Mindy Byrd (King’s Fork) went 2-for-2 with two walks, three RBI, two runs and her third home run of the season. In the second game, sophomore outfielder Shelby Pendleton (Lakeland) had two runs and an RBI for CU.

CU’s in the middle of a 16-game stretch of road games leading into the CIAA Tournament April 20-23 in Petersburg.

Ballou

Sophomore center fielder Isaac Ballou (Nansemond-Suffolk) helped spark Marshall’s baseball team to an 8-5 win at Eastern Kentucky Tuesday.

Ballou went 2-for-5 with three stolen bases, two runs and an RBI. Ballou’s hitting .294 on the season with one error in 71 fielding chances (.984 fielding percentage) in center.

Marshall (10-13) heads to Houston this weekend for a three-game Conference USA series at Rice.
