CHESAPEAKE — Great Bridge blanked Nansemond River for six innings Tuesday and went on to a 7-1 win to give the Warriors (4-1, 4-1) their first loss on the baseball diamond this season.
The Southeastern District match-up on Great Bridge’s softball field was equally good for the hosts, as Great Bridge opened up a 9-2 lead in the early innings and went on to an 11-6 win over Nansemond River (3-2, 3-2).
After averaging just shy of nine runs a game through their four victories, by the time the Warriors got their first hit, Great Bridge was up 7-0.
Great Bridge used a mix of sharp hitting and a couple Warrior miscues for a big five-run rally in the second.
The Wildcats got a walk and a single to open the frame and a wild pickoff throw to second added fuel for the Wildcats.
Back-to-back singles drove in a run each. NR looked as though it could limit the damage after shortstop Brandon Lowe made a double play, taking a grounder to second himself and firing to first while a GB run scored for a 3-0 lead.
A double, a hit batter and a single followed for the Wildcats off Warrior starter Josh Howard, and it was 5-0 after an 11-batter inning.
Great Bridge tacked on two more with a two-out, two-run triple in the next inning.
Zack Rice came out of the bullpen for Howard to finish the third. Rice went on to pitch 2.1 scoreless and hitless innings. Dylan Roach followed Rice to do the same in the Wildcat sixth inning.
Wildcat double plays erased leadoff runners for the Warriors in the third and fourth innings. The Warriors got on the board with Hayden Champigny’s single knocking in Kyle Moore in the seventh.
The Lady Warriors came out knocking the ball all over the yard to gain a 2-0 lead. In the top of the first, Shelbi Holloman’s double sparked the Lady Warriors and Hope Mounie’s grounder brought Holloman in. Amanda Lafferty singled to bring in Kayla Coburn.
The Lady Wildcats had no problem piling up 16 hits on the day. Great Bridge plated three runs to quickly answer NR’s first inning. GB added two in the second and four in the third.
NR’s offense awoke in the last half-inning, but it was too little, too late. Coburn and Alex Keiser drove in runs with singles in a three-run inning before Great Bridge got the last out.
Holloman and Coburn both went 2-for-4, with Holloman’s hits being doubles. Sydney Glover (3-2) pitched all the way for NR.
Both Warrior diamond teams move on to host Hickory Friday evening, with both games at 5:30 p.m.
