Holland Road was shut down in the area of the CenterPoint development for several hours Monday after a contractor damaged a gas line just before 11:30 a.m.
The contractor working at CenterPoint Drive and Holland Road notified police a gas line had been damaged. Both northbound and southbound lanes in the 2400 block of Holland Road were initially shut down, and area businesses including 7-Eleven, Ace Hardware and Target Warehouses were told to keep employees in their buildings.
Virginia Natural Gas crews responded to the scene to contain the natural gas leak.
Traffic detours were set up along Manning Road and Copeland Road. Even so, about 174 students from Kilby Shores Elementary, Southwestern Elementary, Forest Glen Middle and Lakeland High schools were not able to be delivered home by bus. Parents were notified by phone messages, emails and text messages.
The road reopened again before 4 p.m.
