A Virginia House Republican has wasted no time announcing his candidacy for a Senate seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Harry Blevins.

Delegate John A. Cosgrove, who currently represents the 78th District in Chesapeake, says he will run for the open seat, anticipating a special election in early August.

Cosgrove is a former member and vice-mayor of the Chesapeake City Council, where he served more than three years. He was elected to the House of Delegates in 2001.

An electronics engineer, Cosgrove already has gotten endorsements from a number of prominent Republicans, including his predecessor.

“Delegate John Cosgrove has a demonstrated track record and a solid understanding of the legislative process,” Blevins said in a press release. “I endorse John without reservation.”

Congressman J. Randy Forbes also has offered his support.

“John Cosgrove has been an excellent leader in Richmond,” Forbes said in a press release. “With the retirement of our dear friend, Harry Blevins, I can think of no one who will work harder for the people of the 14th District than John. I am proud to support him.”

Cosgrove currently is the vice-chair of the transportation committee in the House of Delegates, and also serves on Commerce and Labor, Privileges and Elections and Science and Technology. He’s also chairman of the Hampton Roads Caucus, Virginia Delegation of the Chesapeake Bay Commission and the Aerospace and Aviation Advisory Council to the Governor. He’s immediate past president of the Virginia Housing Commission.
