Georgetown led No. 1 Connecticut until well into the second half of Sunday’s regional semifinal game of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament before the Lady Huskies rallied for a 68-63 win to make the final eight of the tourney.

The No. 5-seed Lady Hoyas (24-11) led 35-32 at halftime and 53-46 with 9:36 left in the game. Connecticut (35-1) put together a 17-2 run to lead 63-55 at the 3:07 mark and go on to advance. UCONN beat Georgetown all three times the Big East mates met this season.

Lady Hoya sophomore TaShauna “Sugar” Rodgers (King’s Fork) scored 11 points on 3-for-17 shooting one game after scoring a career-high 34 points in GU’s second-round win against Maryland. Rodgers added four rebounds and three steals Sunday.

Rodgers was a unanimous choice to the first team All-Big East Team this season averaging 18.7 points per game. Rodgers made 96 three-pointers this season to go with 4.9 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game.

This was Georgetown’s third appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Lady Hoyas went one round deeper into the tournament than they did a year ago.

Virginia Tech junior Keith Ricks (King’s Fork) won an individual title and helped a Hokie relay team win Saturday at the Yellow Jacket Invitational in Atlanta.

Ricks won the 100-meter dash in a time of 10.50 seconds and finished second, but as the top collegian, in the 200 in 21.14 seconds.

As one leg of VT’s 4×100-meter relay, Ricks helped the Hokies win in a time of 40.92, the third-best 4×100 time in VT program history.

Benedict’s Charae Rice (Nansemond River) was named SIAC (Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) softball Player of the Week for the week ending Mar. 22.

Rice, a senior third baseman and one of the top sluggers in NCAA Div. II for the past three seasons, hit six home runs in six games as Benedict (12-7) went 4-2 at the SIAC Crossover event a week ago.

The homers weren’t the only numbers Rice put up. She hit .600 (12-for-20) with 13 RBI and a 1.650 slugging percentage.

Outfielder LaTonia Gatling (King’s Fork) went 3-for-7 and scored a run in both games as Fayetteville St. swept Johnson C. Smith, by scores of 11-3 and 9-1, in a CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) softball doubleheader Saturday.

FSU (12-24, 5-3) has eight more CIAA games before the conference tournament in three weeks in Petersburg.

Norfolk State split a doubleheader on the baseball diamond against visiting North Carolina A&T Saturday, beating the Aggies 4-3 before falling in game two 7-4.

Senior outfielder and third-place hitter John Rasberry (Greenbrier Christian/Lakeland) went 2-for-3 in both games with three RBI in the NSU win.

The Spartans (8-15, 1-1 MEAC) travel to play William and Mary Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The Norfolk Tides, the triple-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, will host Norfolk St. in an exhibition game at Harbor Park on Tuesday, Apr. 5 at 7:15 p.m.
