Suffolk police have identified the victim in a Sunday morning homicide as Angelo Fleming Beale, 24, of the 1800 block of Nansemond Parkway.
According to a news release from the city, officers responded to Cogic Square Apartments on Stacey Drive for a call of shots fired at 2:53 a.m. Upon arrival, they found Beale suffering from a gunshot wound to the face. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at Sentara Obici Hospital, where he had been taken by ambulance.
Family members on Monday declined to talk to the Suffolk News-Herald but told other media outlets Beale was the father of two children.
Officers had responded to the apartment complex less than an hour earlier for a call of a person carrying a gun and had cleared a disturbance once they got on scene.
Officers had also heard gunshots earlier in the night, the city news release said.
This homicide marks the city’s third of the calendar year. At this point in 2012, the city had seen no homicides, and only had two in the entire year.
City Chief of Staff Debbie George said no suspect information is available. Anyone who has information on the homicide is asked to call Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP. Callers to Crime Line never have to give their names or appear in court, and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
