Windsor’s Freeman to study at Joffrey

Cheyenne Madelynn Freeman, 14, of Windsor, will further her study of dance this summer at the internationally acclaimed Joffrey School of Ballet in New York.

She has been accepted to the school’s New York City programs, including the Joffrey Ballet intensive-performance track, the pre-professional and professional ballet intensive and contemporary/jazz intensive tracks.

The faculty has also invited her to other training opportunities in cities across the United States, including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Miami, Georgia and Dallas. Her dance audition also secured international training opportunities in Florence, Italy, Madrid, Spain and in Russia at the Bolshoi Ballet. In addition, Joffrey School of Ballet has selected her to study year-round as a jazz/contemporary trainee and ballet trainee in New York City.

Each trainee program enrolls only 75 dancers between the ages of 13 and 25 selected from national and international auditions.

Cheyenne will attend the training programs in New York City in August. The family is working on the details of the full-year training program and plans to visit the school in April before making that determination.

Cheyenne is the daughter of Jessica and Chuck Honeycutt of Windsor and John and Tammi Freeman of Portsmouth. She is an eighth-grade, honor-roll student at Isle of Wight Academy.

She began dancing at the age of 2 and is currently training under Renee’ Perry Mitchell, artist director and former New York Rockette, at the RPM Dance Studio in northern Suffolk.

Cheyenne is also a member of the award-winning competition team, RPM Company, which competes throughout the season at national and regional dance competitions along the East Coast. She has been dancing competitively for five years.

Cheyenne has trained in pointe, ballet, tap, modern, lyrical, jazz, contemporary, and hip hop. She has also studied choreography and received awards for performances of her original work.

In addition to her seven years of training at RPM Dance, she attended Windsor School of Dance from 2001 until 2006 and a summer program at Academie de Ballet in Chesapeake in 2011. During the summer of 2012, Cheyenne attended the summer intensive training program at the prestigious Kirov Academy of Ballet in Washington, D.C.

During her training at RPM Dance, Cheyenne has been recognized with the Rising Star Award, Jazz Dancer of the Year award, Flyer Award, and RPM scholarship awards.

She was also the first runner up for the Miss Isle of Wight Academy pageant earlier in the month.
