Suffolk residents no longer have to travel to North Carolina to see the Rocky Hock Opry — the famed country variety show is coming to Suffolk this week for a special engagement to benefit Meals on Wheels.

“It’s great entertainment for the evening, and you’re giving to a good cause,” said Roseland Worrell, executive director of Suffolk Meals on Wheels. “Come for a good time. It advertises itself.”

The show includes singing, comedy sketches and more. The great entertainment at Friday’s 7 p.m. show at King’s Fork Middle School will be secondary, however, to supporting the cause, Worrell said. No tickets will be sold at the door, so patrons should obtain them in advance.

This is the third annual Opry fundraiser by Meals on Wheels. Worrell said the organization had never held a fundraiser before she took over.

“I thought, ‘Hey, I’ve been told no before,’” Worrell said. “But the board members were very supportive. It just began to catch on.”

The organization’s volunteers deliver two meals each weekday to anyone who is homebound and unable to prepare their own meals. The meals, cooked by Sentara Obici Hospital food services, provide two-thirds of a day’s nutritional requirements. In addition, special diets such as low-sodium or pureed food are available.

A common misconception is that Meals on Wheels recipients have to be elderly, Worrell said.

“Our youngest recipient is 27 years old,” she said. “There is no age discrimination.”

The organization serves Suffolk and Isle of Wight County, from Gates Road all the way to Rushmere.

“It’s a pretty big area,” Worrell said, adding that participation from the county has grown significantly because of increased awareness. “We deliver more to the rural areas than we do in the city.”

More than anything, Worrell is trying to change the public’s view of Meals on Wheels.

“I want to get it out that you get home-delivered meals,” Worrell said. “By me promoting that in a lot of my speeches, it has changed the perception of what Meals on Wheels is about. It used to be whispered behind the back.”

Tickets are also available at Nationwide Insurance, Farmers Hardware in Holland, Beale & Curran PC in Smithfield, Dwight Bradshaw DDS, Virginia Commonwealth Bank, Grafik Trenz, all Farmers Bank locations, Windsor Pharmacy and all Mike Duman Auto locations. Tickets will not be sold at the door.
