A fifth-grader at Driver Elementary School has been recommended for an expulsion hearing after he allegedly brought marijuana to school to show his teacher “because he wanted his father to stop smoking marijuana,” according to a city spokeswoman.

Police responded to the school at 4270 Driver Lane on Friday, city spokeswoman Diana Klink said.

“When asked about the marijuana in the presence of the student’s mother, he advised the officer that he found it in his father’s truck and brought it to school to show his teacher because he wanted his father to stop smoking marijuana,” Klink wrote in an email.

“Per policy, he has been recommended for an expulsion hearing,” Suffolk Public Schools spokeswoman Bethanne Bradshaw said.

It isn’t the first time marijuana has been found in an elementary school in Suffolk; in 2010, the drug was found in a storage cubby belonging to a 4-year-old student at Mack Benn Jr. Elementary School. However, no student was disciplined in that incident because, officials said, anyone could have put the bag of marijuana there.
