Marquette trounces Xavier to start NCAAs

No. 11-seeded Marquette had little problem upsetting No. 6 Xavier, winning 66-55 in a second-round NCAA Tournament game Friday night in Cleveland.

Gardner at Marquette: King’s Fork alum Davante Gardner scored four points in 15 minutes of play for Marquette as the Golden Eagles advanced past Xavier with a 66-55 win in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Friday night in Cleveland. No. 11 Marquette takes on No. 3 Syracuse Sunday evening for a spot in the Sweet 16.

The Golden Eagles (21-14) led the Musketeers (24-8) 33-20 at halftime and kept going to a 47-29 lead six minutes into the second half.

Freshman forward Davante Gardner (King’s Fork) contributed four points and five rebounds in 15 minutes of action for Marquette.

The Golden Eagles advance to play No. 3 Syracuse (27-7) in the third round, the round of 32, Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at Quicken Loans Arena. Marquette topped Syracuse 76-70 in a Big East game in Milwaukee on Jan. 29.
