No injuries in trash truck fire

Nobody was hurt when a city trash truck caught fire Friday around 2 p.m. in the Sleepy Lake community.

The Suffolk Fire Department and Chuckatuck Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene when the fire started, apparently as the result of an electrical problem in the cab of the rear-loader truck. That fire was extinguished, but not before the fire spread to the trash in the back of the truck.

The fire department towed the truck to the public works roadway maintenance facility on Kings Highway. Staff dumped the refuse on the ground while the fire department sprayed water on the refuse as it came out of the truck.

The trash was loaded into dump trucks by public works crews and transferred to the landfill. The truck was a total loss.
