One day after a dramatic, last-out over a city rival to start its softball campaign, King’s Fork took a much easier route to get to 2-0 on the young season by posting 19 hits in an 18-4 win over visiting Churchland on Wednesday afternoon.
Tuesday’s season-opening and district-opening 8-7 win versus Nansemond River came down to Monica Logwood’s two-out, two-run double in the last half of the seventh.
The Lady Bulldogs decided the match-up with Churchland with a six-run rally in the first inning and a nine-run rally in the third inning.
After the Lady Bulldogs, with Brittany Raynor doing the pitching, retired the side in order to start the game, it took three Churchland pitches for KF to gain the lead.
Autumn Vick singled with a sharp grounder up the middle on the second pitch she saw. On the first pitch to Megan Blythe, Vick stole second and raced the rest of the way around thanks to a Churchland overthrow that eluded the center fielder and went to the outfield fence.
Batters four, five and six in KF’s order, Kristin Moore, Niki Cuevas and Raynor strung together singles, making the score 2-0 with the bases loaded.
Logwood smacked a single into left field to bring Moore in. KF’s ninth-place hitter, Ashley Roten, had the big blast of the inning, driving a shot to the left-center field gap for a three-RBI double and a 6-0 KF margin.
The parade of base hits resumed a couple innings later. Each batter in the KF order scored once in the rally.
Starting with an RBI single by Roten, seven straight Lady Bulldog hitters knocked singles. Taylor Davis ended the streak by shooting a double, for two more runs, down the left field line.
Raynor retired the first 12 Lady Truckers she faced and a Churchland single starting the top of the fifth broke up a perfect game. Raynor improved to a 2-0 record.
Vick, Cuevas and Raynor had three hits each. Jennifer Delucia scored three runs and drove in two RBI. Roten tallied four RBI.
King’s Fork (2-0, 1-0) returns to district play Friday with a game at Deep Creek at 5:30 p.m.
