Chief Petty Officer Byron Shambley, a Yeoman aboard the USS George H.W. Bush, retired from the U.S. Navy recently after 22 years of service.

Shambley, a Suffolk resident, celebrated his retirement with a ceremony aboard the aircraft carrier on March 4 and a party at the downtown Hilton Garden Inn on Friday.

Shambley received his recruit training in Orlando, Fla., and served his first assignment aboard the USS Ponce. Other assignments have included Assault Craft Unit 4, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service in Naples, Italy, the Strike Fighter Squadron aboard the USS Blue Ridge and postings in Yokosuka, Japan, and El Salvador.

A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., he earned the nickname “Iceman” on the basketball court. He kept the nickname when, having qualified to ride in the backseat of an F/18 fighter jet, he got the chance one day to control the plane for a few minutes on a bombing run.

Shambley earned the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (five awards), the Enlisted Surface Warfare Insignia and the Enlisted Aviation Warfare Insignia.
