Essie S. Ridley

NORFOLK — Mrs. Essie S. Ridley passed away on Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, at Autumn Care of Norfolk, Va.

She was the daughter of the late Ralph and Florine Scott and the widow of the late Henry Ridley Sr. She was a lifelong resident of Suffolk, Va., and a dedicated member of Gethsemane Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Elviria S. Holland and Alma S. Dolberry; her brothers, Herbert T. Scott and Willie R. “Buddy” Scott, and her stepsons, Montie Ridley and Paul Ridley.

She leaves to cherish her memory two sons, Adolph C. Scott, of Suffolk, Va., and Calvin Wood, of Upper Marlboro, Md. She is also survived by two sisters, Levy S. Jordan, of Baltimore, Md., and Josephine S. Christian (John), of Newport News, Va.; and two sisters-in-law, Dora Scott, of Suffolk, Va., and Ometta Scott, of Franklin, Va. In addition, she is survived by her stepchildren, Minnie Boone (Carl), of Suffolk; Mary Ridley, of Washington, D.C.; Barbara Flowers, of Maryland; Annette Brimmer (Donald), of Virginia Beach; Dennis Ridley (LaVerne), of Cibalo, Texas; and Henry Ridley Jr., of Suffolk, as well as several step-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many other family members and friends. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

As requested by Mrs. Ridley, a graveside service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the cemetery of Gethsemane Baptist Church, 1656 Copeland Road, Suffolk, Va., with the Rev. Ernest Simmons Jr. officiating. There will be no public viewing. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gethsemane Baptist Church. R.W. Baker & Co.
