Monarchs repeat as CAA champs

Old Dominion repeated as CAA Tournament champions Monday with a 70-65 win over Virginia Commonwealth in Richmond and the Monarchs will go to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season and fourth time in the last seven years.

Wright

The Monarchs (27-6) were the No. 2 seed in the tournament and went through No. 7 Delaware, 59-50, and No. 3 Hofstra, 77-69, to get to the final against the No. 4 Rams.

Sophomore forward Nick Wright (Nansemond River) played two minutes in the final. For the season, Wright’s played in all 33 games, averaging 6.6 minutes, 1.5 points and 1.5 rebounds a game.

The Monarch roster includes Ben Finney, a senior from Norcom, Frank Hassell, a senior from Indian River, Darius James, a senior from Tallwood and Dimitri Batten, a freshman from Kecoughtan.

Last March, ODU beat Notre Dame in the first round of the NCAAs before falling to No. 3 seed Baylor.

The Monarchs will learn where they go in the 68-team bracket Sunday evening.

Wilkins

Boston College junior catcher Brittany Wilkins (Nansemond-Suffolk) slugged her fourth, fifth and sixth home runs of the young softball season as BC played five games over the weekend in Reno, Nev.

Wilkins had her second two-homer game of the season in BC’s 7-5 loss to DePaul Friday. In addition to the homers, Wilkins, BC’s starting catcher, totaled five doubles, eight runs batted in and six runs in the five games.

The Lady Eagles (4-11) went 1-4, with Wilkins getting two doubles and a run in an 11-4 win against Nevada. BC continues in Reno with games scheduled Friday-Sunday.

James Madison junior Casey Mansfield (Isle of Wight) drove in the Lady Dukes’ lone run with a pinch-hit single in a 5-1 loss to Indiana Sunday in Athens, Ga.

Mansfield’s played in seven games, starting four, at first base for JMU (9-4). She hit a home run in a 10-4 JMU win over Robert Morris during the Charlotte Green and White Classic. JMU went 4-1 in the Charlotte tournament Feb. 25-27.

JMU visits Norfolk State for a doubleheader Wednesday beginning at 2 p.m.

The Lady Spartans (3-7) come into the twinbill with a split doubleheader versus Delaware St. Saturday. Former King’s Fork standouts Gillian Giarrizzo and Whitney Holland play for the Lady Spartans.
