Unchain your dogs

To the editor:
I was very disappointed when I read that the City Council had decided to just monitor dogs that are tethered and not take action to ban the practice. This really is a travesty for the animals of our city.
Research has shown that dogs who are chained or at the end of a rope 24/7 lead a miserable life. I’m sure the members of the council did not research this subject, because if they had, I’m sure they would have taken action.
Dogs that have to live at the end of a rope or chain often have to sleep and eat where they go to the bathroom. Many of them have to lie in their own urine and feces, because they cannot get far enough away from it.
I hope the council will reconsider, because I don’t want to live in a community that has so little regard for the welfare of its animals. Come on, Suffolk. Do the right thing — the moral thing — and unchain or un-tether your dogs!
