Chowan’s women’s basketball season came to a close Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the CIAA Tournament in Charlotte.

The Lady Hawks beat Livingstone 56-53 in the first round Monday. CU trailed 37-20 with 17:47 left in the game.

Ransheda Jennings (King’s Fork) made a three-pointer to give CU a 44-43 lead with 6:29 remaining and the Lady Hawks completed the comeback from there. Jennings had 13 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Johnson C. Smith beat Chowan 71-52 in the quarterfinals. Jennings scored 17 points. The Lady Hawks finish the season 15-13 overall.

Jennings, a junior guard, earned All-CIAA honors for the season.

Winthrop fell to VMI, 78-73, in the quarterfinals of the Big South men’s basketball tournament Tuesday night in Lexington, ending the Eagles (13-17) season and chances of returning to the NCAA Tournament.

Junior guard Andre Jones (Nansemond River) had 18 points and six rebounds for the Eagles. Jones averaged 10.7 points per game, 3.7 rebounds per game and 35.6 percent three-point shooting for the season.

Sophomore Johnny Pitt (Nansemond River) is hitting .417 through the early part of the baseball season for Elizabeth City State (5-5, 2-2 CIAA).

Pitt’s played in five games and has three runs, two doubles and two RBI, playing mainly as a designated hitter.

ECSU swept Lincoln Saturday and was swept by Winston-Salem St. Sunday in CIAA doubleheaders.

In softball, Christopher Newport, ranked No. 14 in NCAA Division III, swept No. 11 Salisbury Tuesday in Newport News. The Lady Captains (4-2) won game one 1-0 and game two 4-3 in eight innings.

Junior first baseman Maggie Farris (King’s Fork) started both games for CNU, going 0-for-1 at the plate in game one and 1-for-4 in game two.

CNU will be in the Beach Blast at Virginia Beach’s Princess Anne Park Friday and Saturday. Virginia Wesleyan, Randolph and seven more schools are in the Beach Blast.

Longwood’s softball squad turned in its second straight 4-0 weekend last weekend by winning the Longwood Classic over Stony Brook, Quinnipiac and Bucknell.

Leigh Sexton (King’s Fork) has played in seven of the eight Longwood games so far, mostly as a reserve infielder. Sexton’s hitting .375 and has scored five runs.

Longwood travels to Orlando for the Citrus Classic Friday-Sunday, with games lined up against Notre Dame, Long Island, Maryland, Illinois and Illinois St.
