Less than 24 hours after being edged out of a state title in the boys triple jump, Lakeland junior Anaquan Peterson won his first state championship in the long jump Saturday in the VHSL (Virginia High School League) Group AAA Indoor Track and Field State Championships at Hampton’s Boo Williams Sportsplex.

On Friday, day one of the meet, Peterson led the triple jump from the preliminary rounds until the next-to-last competitor of the last round of the finals. Peterson had to settle for runner-up in the state when Allen Bordley of First Colonial beat his mark.

It was Peterson who moved ahead in the finals of the long jump Saturday. The Cavalier junior did so with his best jump of the season by over a foot. Peterson jumped 23-feet-6 in the second round of the finals and it stood easily for the state title.

Sean Price of South Lakes was second with a mark of 22-feet-4.5. Peterson’s best jump coming into Saturday was 22-feet-2.5. Seven long jumpers had better qualifying marks than Peterson coming into the meet.

Peterson’s state title was far from the only success of the day for the Cavaliers.

Partway through Saturday’s events, Lakeland’s 4×200 relay team of Peterson, Quentin Gilchrist, JaQuan Demiel and Rausheeim Thompson finished second in the state. The Cavs came in 0.57 seconds behind Indian River as the Southeastern District mates finished one-two as they did in the Eastern Region Championships a week earlier.

Demiel finished third in the 55-meter hurdles in a time of 7.37 seconds. Gilchrist finished fifth in the 55-meer dash in 6.54 seconds.

King’s Fork senior Qualitra Brown, who’s accepted a track scholarship to attend Villanova University next year, finished eighth in the 500 meters in 1:17.23.
