Trophy: First grade student, Lauren Martino from Hillpoint Elementary School received a trophy for second place in photography in the Suffolk PTA Reflections Contest. Martino and 47 of her peers were recognized for their achievement in the Reflections Contest Wednesday during an awards ceremony at King’s Fork Middle School.

Suffolk Public Schools students were honored Wednesday at King’s Fork Middle School for their achievement in the 2010 Suffolk PTA Reflections Contest.

The 47 students turned in a variety of artwork entries ranging from dance choreography and film production to literature and visual arts. The works were based on the theme “Together we can…”

“I think our students in Suffolk represented us well,” said Willie Woodson, vice president of the Oakland Elementary School PTA and chair of Reflections for the citywide PTA. “This speaks very highly of the folks teaching them and themselves.”

Of the students who were recognized at the city level, 20 students went on to district competition. Of those students, 18 won awards, and eight will move on to state competition. The citywide PTA recognized the district competition winners at the event.

A few students shared their work, in the form of reading their poetry and dancing their original compositions. The PTA awarded trophies for first, second and third place and honorable mention.

Several principals, art and music teachers, parents, grandparents and Superintendent Deran Whitney attended the event.

“I’m proud of our students here in the Suffolk Public Schools system,” Woodson said.

The district-level award winners are listed below. Woodson is anxiously waiting for the results of the state competition.
