On Wednesday night in a “driving rainstorm” according to the report on cnusports.com, Christopher Newport beat Cabrini 1-0 in the first round of the NCAA (Div. III) Field Hockey Tournament.

Taylor Harrell scored in the 12th minute and CNU’s defense held Cabrini to one shot. Katelyn Yandle (Nansemond River) started and had a shot on goal for CNU.

The Lady Captains (16-3) advance to face Cortland St. (N.Y.) in Salisbury, Md. on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Freshman safety Asaad Graham (Lakeland) had 5.5 tackles and a fumble recovery in Averett’s 34-28 triple-overtime win at Ferrum on Saturday. Averett improved to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in the USA South Conference.

A touchdown by Ferrum with 0:57 left in regulation made it 14-14. The teams traded touchdowns until Averett held Ferrum in the third overtime and the Cougars scored to end the game.

For the season, Graham has 11 tackles. The win gives Averett a four-game winning streak. Averett hosts N.C. Wesleyan (7-2, 6-0) today at 1 p.m. With a victory, Averett would unseat the Bishops from first place, win the USA South title and claim an NCAA Tournament spot.

Trinity (Tex.) defeated Randolph-Macon in four sets, 25-23, 25-13, 22-25, 25-17, to end RMC’s girls volleyball season in the first round of the NCAA (Div. III) Tournament on Thursday in Georgetown, Tex.

Senior April Hines (Nansemond River) had seven kills and two solo blocks for RMC. The Lady Yellow Jackets (28-7) finish the season with the best record in program history.
