Cecile Bernard Dickson, 84, of 401 Haverhill Court, Suffolk, passed away Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011 at Sentara Obici Hospital. She was a native of Suffolk and the daughter of the late Arthur James Bernard and Hattie Boone Bernard. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ellis Dickson; one daughter, Charlene Hicks; three sisters, Alida B. Tignor, Angele B. Williams and Loleeta B. Clark; two brothers, Malcolm B. Bernard and Cecil G. Bernard.

She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. Cecile received a Bachelor of Science degree from Elizabeth City State University and a master’s degree in sociology from Columbia University. She taught at Andrew J. Brown, Oakland and East Suffolk Elementary Schools in Suffolk. After moving to New York, she worked as a social worker for many years. She was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.

She leaves to cherish her memory one son, Bernard D. Dickson (Karen), of Suffolk; one daughter, Maureen Jones, of Franklin, Va.; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Bernard, of Suffolk; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, officiated by Father Frederick Walker. Interment will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens.
