Suffolk City Council is set to decide on the fate of an appeal of a Historic Landmarks Commission decision at its meeting Wednesday.

Members also will get updates on the U.S. Joint Forces Command closure and the General Assembly session during the meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. at 441 Market St. A work session at 4 p.m. precedes the regular meeting.

The owner of 316 Pinner St. appealed to City Council after the Historic Landmarks Commission denied his after-the-fact request to install vinyl siding on his home. Vinyl siding is among the materials prohibited in the historic district.

City Council held a joint meeting earlier this month with the commission to discuss the size of the district and guidelines for it. There appears to be some consensus that at least a portion of the district should be eliminated, but it is unclear whether Pinner Street would remain in the district. There may be further discussion coming, but council is obligated to vote on the appeal at this meeting.

Also on Wednesday, the council will hear an update on the JFCOM disestablishment plan. City leaders learned last week that Suffolk’s JFCOM location will shrink by 25 percent of its current workforce and will go to one building from three. The closure was proposed by Defense Secretary Robert Gates in August and approved by President Barack Obama last month.

The city also will receive an update on the General Assembly session currently going on in Richmond. It is set to adjourn next week.

In the 4 p.m. work session, the council will learn about the city’s investment earning practices from Treasurer Ron Williams. City assessor Sid Daughtrey also will give a presentation on the city’s real estate tax exemption programs.
