Lady Crusaders roll to win

After being routed earlier this week by Isle of Wight Academy, First Baptist’s girls basketball team got to be on the other side of a lopsided contest Friday afternoon, beating visiting Virginia Beach Friends School 51-8.
It took the Lady Crusaders a few minutes to get into the game but when they did, they blanked the guests for nearly half of the game from around midway through the first quarter until a couple minutes into the third period.
Virginia Beach, with a squad of only six players, actually led 4-1 in the early going and it took the Lady Crusaders 6:25 worth of play before Morgan Overton scored after grabbing an offensive rebound for First Baptist’s opening field goal.
By the end of the game, all 10 Lady Crusaders notched at least one field goal.
Megan Farmer scored a putback basket in the lane and Meredith Overton’s steal turned into a lay-up for Victoria Carr, all within the last 0:11 of the first period, to give the Lady Crusaders an 8-4 lead.
Morgan Overton and Hannah Fagan drained open jumpers on back-to-back possessions to run First Baptist’s margin up to 19-4 as the clock moved toward two minutes left in the half.
First Baptist won the second period 13-0 for a 21-4 halftime lead. From the 4-1 Virginia Beach lead, the Lady Crusaders wound up with 22 unanswered points.
The Lady Crusaders succeeded with everyone getting in the scorebook with a couple minutes still to go.
“It was good to have our second string in and see them really doing a good job,” said First Baptist head coach Kelli Overton. “Actually, they played just as well as the first string.”
Carr, Farmer and Morgan Overton scored 10 points each. Carr and Farmer tallied 11 rebounds each. Morgan Overton added six rebounds, six steals and four assists.
“We’re learning to play as a team,” Overton said.
“Our confidence level is rising. As a small school usually playing versus larger schools sometimes we’ve struggled with that, but we’ve been doing a better job,” she said.
The 1-1 week moves the Lady Crusaders to an 8-8 overall record but Friday’s win, a Seven Cities Athletic Conference win, takes First Baptist to a 6-2 league mark keeping the Lady Crusaders among the top teams in the conference.
