Zoom in for Zumba

Zumba is one of the most trendy aerobic group exercise classes, and it now is being offered at the East Suffolk Recreation Center.

Zumba employs dance moves to work muscles all over the body and burn calories quickly.

“Zumba is an aerobics class basically set to Latin dance music,” said Mike Frickanisce, fitness specialist at the East Suffolk Recreation Center on South Sixth Street.

You don’t have to be able to dance well to participate, Frickanisce said. People at different levels can still get the physical benefit from the class.

“We keep the beat going, and keep the feet moving,” Frickanisce said.

The Zumba class is being taught by Dorothy Morrison, college student and first-time Zumba instructor who, according to Frickanisce, is receiving rave reviews.

“They are very happy with her,” he said. “She is very upbeat.”

The Zumba class is an eight-week program that will run through March 16. Students are still being accepted.

At the requests of patrons, the center will hold future Zumba classes, Frickanisce said.

Aerobic activities are important for fitness, Frickanisce said. Using the bike or treadmill can become boring after a while, but “Zumba is something new and different,” he said. “There are a lot of benefits to it. If you are looking for something different, for a change of pace, try Zumba.”

The class is held on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The cost is $25 for East Suffolk Recreation Center members and $35 for non-members. The center is located at 138 S. Sixth St. For more information, call Frickanisce at 514-4505.
