National Signing Day at King’s Fork meant Division I athletic scholarships for a gridiron standout and one of the state’s best sprinters on the track.

George Riddick, a 6-foot-3, 285 pound offensive lineman/defensive lineman, will play football next season at Norfolk State.

Qualitra Brown, who stars in sprint events ranging from the 55 meters to the 500 for the Lady Bulldogs, has committed to a track and field scholarship at Villanova.

Brown’s been a major contributor for King’s Fork’s track team since her freshman year. Last outdoor season, Brown reached the VHSL (Virginia High School League) State Championships in the 200 and 400-meter dashes, finishing fifth in the state in the 400.

She qualified for and competed in the New Balance Nationals in Greensboro, N.C. and the AAU Junior Olympics in Norfolk during the summer.

Brown holds King’s Fork school records in the 55 (7.33 seconds), 100 (12.24), 200 (24.78), 300 (40.65), 400 (55.80), 500 (1:18.37), 800 (2:35.74) and the long jump (17-feet-10).

Riddick was one of 11 new recruits to sign Letters of Intent with Norfolk St. on Wednesday, the first day for rising college football players to officially sign scholarship offers. Riddick is listed as an offensive lineman by the Spartans.

For the Bulldogs, Riddick’s a two-sport athlete as he’s also a power-hitting first baseman. On the gridiron, Riddick made second team All-Southeastern District this fall.

“George is one of the best offensive linemen in the Tidewater area,” said Norfolk State head coach Pete Adrian. “He could play offense or defense for us and runs very well for his size. He’s a true Division I-A caliber player.”

“We are very pleased with this group of recruits,” Adrian said. “Our main goal was to increase our team speed offensively.”

The Spartans went 6-5 last season to make it back-to-back winning seasons under Adrian, who’s entering his seventh season at Norfolk St. NSU hosts Virginia State to open its season on Sept. 3.

Lakeland grad Tyrece Shepherd is a redshirt-freshman wide receiver for the Spartans.

Riddick and Brown will have signing ceremonies at the school within the next couple weeks.
