Johns Hopkins ended Hampden-Sydney’s football season with a 23-7 win on Saturday at Hampden-Sydney in the first round of the NCAA Div. III Tournament.

The Blue Jays forced the usually high-scoring, pass-happy Tigers into three interceptions. HSC (10-1) was held to 10 first downs. Senior receiver Adam Gillette (Nansemond-Suffolk) had four receptions for 36 yards for HSC. For the season, Gillette had 36 catches for 566 yards and two touchdowns.

East Carolina (7-4, 6-1) remained in first place in its division in Conference USA with a 37-21 win over visiting UAB on Saturday.

Sophomore receiver Darryl Freeney (Nansemond River) starred again for the Pirate offense with seven receptions for 118 yards and a 59-yard touchdown reception. Freeney’s touchdown gave ECU a 30-6 lead late in the third quarter. Freeney’s gone over 100 receiving yards in three of the last four games.

ECU can win its division and a spot in the C-USA championship game with a win on Saturday afternoon in Greensville, N.C. against Southern Mississippi.

UVA-Wise senior Brian Pisani (Nansemond River) earned First Team All-Conference honors for the first time in his collegiate career as the top center in the Mid-South Conference this football season.

Pisani is a three-year starter at center for the Highland Cavaliers. Pisani helped UVA-Wise average 285 passing yards per game this season. Pisani’s class had three winning seasons in its four years for UVA-Wise.

Georgetown freshman TaShauna Rodgers (King’s Fork) was voted to the BTI Classic All-Tournament Team on Sunday as the Lady Hoyas went 2-1 in the tournament in West Lafayette, Ind.

Georgetown lost to Dayton before beating Seattle and No. 23 Purdue. In Sunday’s win over Purdue, Rodgers scored a team-high 21 points, three rebounds and two assists. Rodgers made three of Georgetown’s four three-point goals. The win was Georgetown’s (3-2) first win against a nationally-ranked opponent since Feb. 2, 2008.

Rodgers is averaging 18.0 points per game and shooting 36.6 percent (15-of-41) from three-point range and 85.0 percent (17-of-20) from the foul line.

Christopher Newport’s soccer season came to a close on Sunday in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.

The Captains advanced through the round of 16 on Saturday in York, Pa. by beating Stevens Tech in penalty kicks. The teams were scoreless until the penalty kick round, where CNU won 4-2.

CNU went to a penalty kick shootout for the third straight match in Sunday’s match against Williams, but lost 4-1 in penalty kicks. CNU took a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute, but Williams tied the match in the 63rd minute. Sophomore defender Trevor Moyer (Nansemond River) started all four NCAA Tournament matches for CNU.

This was the third time in program history the Captains (19-2-4) reached the final eight of the NCAA Tournament.
