Chili cook-off set for Saturday

No matter what your specific taste is, if you’ve got a taste for chili, you’ll be able to find satisfaction on Saturday at the AJ Gators restaurant at Chesapeake Square.
Spicy, hot, mild, veggie, white, turkey and red chili will all be up for tasting at the restaurant’s third annual Chili Cook-Off to benefit the Suffolk Humane Society.
“There will be wonderful chili and serious chili chefs out there,” said Kay Hurley, director of community outreach for the Suffolk Humane Society.
The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Chili entries will be judged at noon.
Contestants will compete for first-, second-, and third-place awards in the categories of red and white chili.
The “Pot Licker” award will be given to the entry that has been completely eaten first.
Visitors will be able to sample chili at 50 cents per sample.
“Come early to sample chili before it’s gone,” Hurley said.
Last year the event raised more than $1,000 for the Suffolk Humane Society. The money raised will be put toward building a Suffolk Humane Society facility; spaying and neutering; BARKS, Books and Reading for Kids in Suffolk; adopt-a-thons; and other Humane Society programs.
In addition to the chili contest, Hurley said, there will be live music performed by Johnny Bland, Don Hamlet, and Friends, who play classic acoustic rock. Also, there will be Chili Cook-Off T-shirts for sale and a raffle.
The price for entering a chili in the competition is $15. AJ Gators can only accept the first 50 entries. As of Wednesday, there were 30 entries, Hurley said.
The event is free and open to the public.
“It’s going to be lots of fun,” Hurley said. “It’s a great way to spend time on a winter afternoon with friends, family and music. It’s a way to help those who can’t help themselves.”
