A Suffolk man was arrested Tuesday after his nephew accused him of stabbing him and pouring gasoline on him.

Walter Lee Smith Jr., 51, was being held at Western Tidewater Regional Jail on charges of malicious wounding by caustic substance, malicious wounding and stabbing.

Officers responded to the 100 block of Greenfield Crescent about 11:30 p.m. on Monday. They found the victim, Jeffery Snow, smoking a cigarette and bleeding uncontrollably from a puncture wound on the left side of his torso, city spokeswoman Diana Klink said.

Snow initially tried to walk away from the officer, Klink said. He told police he had been drinking at his godmother’s house when he left and walked down Carolina Road.

He was passing by the residence he shares with Smith, his uncle, when his uncle allegedly attacked him. Snow told police his uncle poured gasoline on him, flicked a lighter and threatened to light the victim on fire. The victim also said Smith pulled out a box cutter and charged him.

The man was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he was treated and released.

Klink said there’s no word on how the man managed to avoid igniting himself when lighting his cigarette.
