NSA’s boys lose in overtime

The Nansemond-Suffolk Academy varsity boys’ basketball team played host in a 52-45 overtime loss to Windsor High School on Tuesday night.
The competitive game was a welcome change for NSA after suffering a 66-19 defeat to Tidewater Academy last Friday, but an issue from that game was still present against Windsor — poor shooting.
“Overall, I thought we played pretty well,” Saints head coach Randolph Davis said. “We’ve just got to find a way to put the ball in the basket. That’s been our biggest problem in the last two games.”
It was a close game in which neither team held a substantial lead. Near the end of regulation, with the score 41-41, the Dukes had the ball, took a shot and missed. The Saints rebounded.
“(We) got it up the floor, probably could have taken it a little deeper than we did, but took a shot to try to win the game, and it missed,” Davis said.
“And then we went into overtime and we just got down a little bit, got to the point where we had to foul and the other kid made some foul shots that kind of pushed it out a bit,” he said. “And that was sort of the difference, I thought.”
A bright spot for the Saints in this game was how the underclassmen performed, particularly freshman guard/forward Logan Lokie, who led the team in scoring.
“Logan Lokie had a real good game off the bench,” Davis said. “He had 14 (points) and played really well defensively.”
Freshman guard Morgan Wentz had a strong game, as well, with 13 points and three steals.
Junior forward Adam Turner had nine points, while NSA was also aided by its two junior big men.
“John Hogan and Steve Minter both had huge games on the boards,” Davis said.
Hogan had 12 rebounds, four blocks and two steals, with Minter snagging 10 rebounds and two steals to go with six points.
Though Davis did not expect to run a taxing Wednesday practice with two games left this week, he assured that the team would be working on its shooting.
“We ended up 17-for-53 last night,” he said on Wednesday. “We were getting shots and we were getting good shots, they just weren’t falling, and when you do that and go 6-for-17 from the foul line, you’re going to lose close games.”
NSA (0-3, 0-0) will open up conference play tonight at home against Peninsula Catholic. On Friday night, the Saints will host Appomattox Regional Governor’s School from Petersburg.
