Calling all models — here’s your chance to shine in a fashion show and help “increase the peace” at the same time.

The Suffolk Youth Advisory Council, in conjunction with the Department of Parks and Recreation, will host an Increase the Peace Fashion Show on March 19 at 6 p.m. at Kings Fork Middle School. Auditions will be held today from 5 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Auditions will be held at the East Suffolk Recreation Center, 138 S. Sixth St. Young people ages 3 to 18 are encouraged to attend

The Youth Advisory Council is currently made up of 19 middle and high school students representing public schools and Nansemond-Suffolk Academy. The council was created to give young people a voice in Suffolk and to advise City Council members on issues affecting youth.

The council plans the fashion show to encourage their peers to think and act positively to be fight free and stay focused on their goals, according to Lakita Frazier, director of Parks and Recreation for the city of Suffolk.

“[The ‘Increase the Peace’ Fashion Show] will bring together young people to do something fun and give young people the opportunity to be in the spotlight,” Frazier said.

Students will model formal wear, sports and athletic wear, church and semi-formal wear, and everyday or school wear during the event. The models will be encouraged to incorporate peaceful symbols and props into their attire.

“The event is youth driven, so we want to get their feedback on how to increase the peace,” Frazier said.

The “Increase the Peace” Fashion Show also gives students the opportunity to demonstrate leadership skills and give back to the community, she added.

“It is not just the event. It is the process where relationships are being built,” Frazier said. “It gives them a positive event that is centered around bringing the community together, and it allows them to express themselves in a creative way.”

Every year the Youth Advisory Council chooses a charity or community service event to support. This year a portion of the money raised from the “Increase the Peace” Fashion Show will go to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life on May 13 and 14. Last year the Youth Advisory Council supported the March of Dimes March for Babies event. They plan to support that event again this year, as well.
