CHESAPEAKE — Nansemond River’s girls basketball team completed a busy week with a 62-22 romp at Great Bridge Friday night.
It was a mixed week of results for the Lady Warriors. Western Branch blew out the Lady Warriors 80-45 Tuesday night for NR’s first Southeastern District setback of the season.
The next night at Indian River the Lady Warriors needed overtime for a 50-48 victory.
The Lady Warriors (7-3, 6-1) scored 18 straight points over the last couple minutes of the first period and most of the second period to make their matchup with the Lady Wildcats basically settled by halftime.
NR’s full-court, trapping defense made everything difficult for Great Bridge from the outset. The Lady Warriors totaled 34 steals led by a rare style of double-double, 17 points and 10 steals, by guard Briana McClain.
NR was quicker all over the court but it took a few minutes for the advantage to turn into much offense. Head coach Calvin Mason, Sr. tried spurring his team very early, calling a timeout 1:16 into the game, with the score 0-0, and meeting the five Lady Warriors who were on the floor in the midcourt circle.
Ashante Humphries swiped the ball from a Great Bridge rebounder and turned it into a lay-in to put NR up 8-2. From a 9-4 NR lead the Lady Warriors took total control.
Opening the second period, McClain hit an 18-foot jumper from the wing from an assist out of the post by center Lisa Sharpe. McClain assisted to Sharpe for a move and hoop on the low post next time down the court and NR led 15-4.
McClain hit back-to-back three-pointers followed by a lay-up coming off a Humphries’ steal to make NR’s lead 27-4. The Lady Warriors led 31-9 at halftime.
Great Bridge was winning the third period by a couple points through most of the quarter before more Lady Warrior defense took over and NR scored the last 10 points of the quarter to take a 46-17 advantage to the fourth period.
The Lady Warriors held Great Bridge to six made field goals. Eight Lady Warriors, out of the 11 on the team, had two or more steals.
Sharpe also had a double-double, her second straight, with 13 points and 12 rebounds. The 6-foot-2 junior had 18 points and 20 rebounds Wednesday night at Indian River when the Lady Warriors needed every last point and board.
Jenel Cannon, Cierra Mobley, Kiara Washington and Humphries added six points each.
Friday night’s contest was the second of four straight on the road for the Lady Warriors. Next week, NR plays at Deep Creek Tuesday and begins the second half of the district schedule Friday at Lakeland.
