Chowan’s men’s basketball squad now has two former Nansemond River standouts as sophomore Quinton McDuffie played his first game as a Hawk Friday in Chowan’s 67-53 loss at Division I The Citadel.

McDuffie, a 6-foot-5 forward, had 16 points and 11 rebounds for CU. McDuffie initially attended and played basketball at Virginia Wesleyan after graduating from NR.

Senior guard Mark Brown (Nansemond River) leads the Hawks (1-7) averaging 14.4 points per game. Brown’s shooting 42.1 percent from three-point range and averaging 5.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game.

The Citadel is Chowan’s only Div. I opponent this season. CU goes into CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) play with home games versus Johnson C. Smith Thursday and versus Fayetteville St. Saturday.

Chowan’s women’s basketball team won 76-48 at Bluefield State Thursday in Bluefield, W.Va. Junior point guard Ransheda Jennings (King’s Fork) had 14 points and six steals for CU (3-5).

The Lady Hawks play the first half of the CIAA doubleheaders, facing Johnson C. Smith Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and Fayetteville St., Saturday at 2 p.m.

Sophomore guard Andrea Jones (Nansemond River) is averaging 13.4 points and 4.0 rebounds per game for Mount Olive (5-4).

Mt. Olive beat visiting St. Paul’s 85-52 Thursday with Jones scoring 18 points, hitting three three-pointers and getting five rebounds.

Winthrop (6-7, 2-1) nipped Big South foe Presbyterian (7-8, 1-2) 53-51 in men’s basketball Friday in Rock Hill, S.C.

Junior guard Andre Jones (Nansemond River) hit a trey to bring Winthrop within 51-49 with 0:59 remaining. Jones tied the game with a lay-up with 0:16 left. The Eagles went ahead with Reggie Middleton’s free throw with 1.2 seconds left.

Jones scored 10 points in all and is averaging 11.3 points per game.

Winthrop hosts UNC-Asheville in a Big South game Thursday evening.

Cincinnati improved to 14-0 overall and 2-0 in the Big East with a 70-53 win over Seton Hall (7-7, 1-1) Friday in Cincinnati. The 14-0 mark in UC’s best start in 12 seasons.

Sophomore guard Jaquon

Parker (King’s Fork) is averaging 12 minutes, 2.0 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game for the Bearcats.

The Bearcats host city rival Xavier (8-4) Thursday then travel to play No. 7 Villanova (12-1, 1-0) Sunday afternoon.

Georgetown’s women’s team won a pair of routs between Christmas and the New Year. The Lady Hoyas won 77-37 at Houston Tuesday and 75-54 versus Clemson Thursday in Washington, D.C.

Sophomore guard TaShauna Rodgers (King’s Fork) matched her season high with 28 points versus the Lady Tigers. She made 11-of-16 field goal attempts with 5-of-8 being beyond the three-point arc.

Rodgers is averaging 18.2 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game.

The Lady Hoyas (12-3, 0-1) host Syracuse Tuesday at 7 p.m.

South Carolina State (3-6) faced in-state and Southeastern Conference foe South Carolina (8-5) Thursday and fell 63-44 to the Lady Gamecocks.

Sophomore guard Trinese Fox (Nansemond River) started and played all but four minutes of the game for SCSU. Fox had seven points and three rebounds.

The Lady Bulldogs host MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) opponent Maryland-Eastern Shore Saturday afternoon.

Terika Lunsford, Lakeland’s all-time leading scorer in girls basketball, played her first games with Liberty during a tournament Tuesday and Wednesday at the University of Maryland.

Lunsford transferred to the Lady Flames from Albany and is a redshirt-freshman this season.

Liberty (5-7) lost 81-66 to St. John’s and beat LaSalle 73-53. Lunsford saw action in both contests, playing nine minutes and hitting a three-pointer against LaSalle.

Liberty has a three-game Big South road swing on deck, with trips to High Point, Presbyterian and UNC-Asheville.
