King’s Fork’s boys basketball team was originally scheduled to be playing on the last day of the three-day Ronald Curry Christmas Classic in Hampton Wednesday.

Instead, the Bulldogs arrived at Hampton University’s Convocation Center ready for their first-round game as the area’s snowstorm on Sunday postponed the 16-team tournament for two days.

Even Wednesday though, an opponent was still missing, leaving the Bulldogs still waiting to take the court and shortening their Christmas Classic down to two games.

“We went over there this morning and found out we weren’t playing. So we couldn’t even have a practice today,” said King’s Fork head coach Joshua Worrell.

Blessed Sacrament from New York was the original opponent lined up against King’s Fork. The blizzard in the Northeast, with snow, ice and wind worse even than what Hampton Roads experienced, kept the New York team from traveling.

The tournament and King’s Fork thought they had a team ready to fill in on short notice but it didn’t work out.

“They thought they had a team to fill-in, but their city wouldn’t release them,” Worrell said.

King’s Fork advances to the tourney semifinals against Booker T. Washington Thursday at 4 p.m.

Worrell isn’t sure if the bye counts as a forfeit and win in KF’s regular season record. He’d rather be allowed to find another game to schedule, if that’s possible at this late date. VHSL rules allow teams a maximum of 22 regular-season games, which the Bulldogs have, or maybe had.
