A grand jury on Wednesday indicted a man accused of molesting a young girl during a period of 11 years.
John Steele is indicted on 66 counts of sex crimes, including indecent liberties with a child under 14, carnal knowledge of a minor and rape.
According to city spokeswoman Debbie George, the charges came as a result of an investigation by Kentucky State Police into abuse that allegedly occurred in that state. During the investigation, Kentucky police learned the abuses also allegedly occurred in Virginia.
Indictments also were issued against Jimmie Lee Belcher Jr., who is charged with two counts each of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, malicious wounding and shooting in the commission of a felony.
Just after 1 a.m. Sept. 26, police were called to the 300 block of Ben Street for a reported shooting. They found one victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest, according to information George released at the time. A second victim with a gunshot wound in his arm showed up later at police headquarters.
Meanwhile, Belcher approached police officers on Mt. Horeb Street and told them he had been visiting a friend on Ben Street when two people he did not know grabbed him. George said an investigation had revealed there may have been a dispute over money.
