Warriors take 2nd in Battleground Duals

Tough bout: King’s Fork’s Aaron Hommell carries his Norcom opponent in a 112-pound bout during the 2nd Annual Battleground Duals at King’s Fork Saturday.

All three Suffolk wrestling teams put in a full day’s work, with King’s Fork, Nansemond River and Lakeland each getting five matches in, Saturday at the Second Annual Battleground Duals at King’s Fork.

Nansemond River topped its two city rivals and finished runner-up in the Duals with a 4-1 record. Cosby, from the Central Region, won the Duals with an undefeated day.

Nick Garland, the Warriors’ 103 pound wrestler, was NR’s Most Outstanding Wrestler. Lance Smith, at 152, was Lakeland’s Most Outstanding Wrestler as the Cavs went 1-4. Zach Wall, at 125, was King’s Fork’s top wrestler as the Bulldogs went 0-5. Norcom went 3-2 and Southampton went 2-3.

The Warriors, Cavaliers and Bulldogs have one more weekend’s worth of matches to get ready for the first Southeastern District contests, on Wednesday, Dec. 15.

Nansemond River and King’s Fork will be in the Denbigh Invitational Friday and Saturday. Lakeland goes to the New Kent Invitational Saturday.
