Georgetown sophomore TaShauna “Sugar” Rodgers (King’s Fork) won her first Big East Player of the Week award on Monday for leading the Lady Hoyas to the tournament title and a win over No. 4 Tennessee in the Paradise Jam last week. Rodgers was the Paradise Jam MVP.

On Wednesday, the Lady Hoyas edged visiting Richmond 65-64. GU rallied from a 59-53 deficit with 6:40 remaining.

Rodgers scored 22 points and her jumper broke a tie with 1:05 to go. She hit two three-pointers and added four assists. For the season, she’s averaging 16.9 points and 2.4 steals per game.

No. 12 Georgetown (6-1) plays at Wake Forest Saturday at 7 p.m.

Christopher Newport senior Katelyn Yandle (Nansemond River) was named a third-team All-American for NCAA Div. III by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association last week.

Yandle started every match as a defender this season. While making its fifth straight NCAA Tournament appearance, CNU (15-4) outshot its opponents by an average of 21-9 per game. Yandle led the Lady Captains with 14 goals.

Yandle had 29 goals and 17 assists in her CNU career, making her fifth all-time in program history in goals and points.

Winthrop outlasted Virginia Military 88-82 in overtime in Lexington Thursday night in the Big South basketball opener for both schools.

Junior guard Andre Jones (Nansemond River) scored 21 points in 42 minutes for Winthrop (4-3). Jones was 7-for-18 from the field and 5-for-6 at the line. He added six rebounds and three assists.

Jones is averaging 12.7 points per game and shooting 50.0 percent (9-for-18) from three-point range for the season.

The Eagles continue conference play at Liberty Saturday at 7 p.m.

No. 12 Virginia Tech (10-2, 8-0) and No. 20 Florida State (9-3, 6-2) clash for the ACC Football Championship Saturday at 7:45 p.m.

Dominique Patterson (King’s Fork) is being redshirted this season by the Hokies. Patterson’s a freshman linebacker.

The Seminoles have won 13 of their last 14 games against the Hokies. Virginia Tech’s going for its third ACC championship in the last four years. The winner gets an automatic berth into a BCS bowl game.

William and Mary (8-3) hosts Georgia Southern (9-3) in the round of 16 of the Football Championship Subdivision Playoffs Saturday in Williamsburg at 1:30 p.m.

The Tribe won the Colonial championship and is the No. 2 overall seed in the FCS tournament.

Georgia Southern beat South Carolina St. 41-16 to advance through the first round of the playoffs last Saturday. The Eagles have won six FCS/1-AA national championships; the last being in 2000.

Redshirt-sophomore Andy Topping (Nansemond River) is a field goal snapper and reserve linebacker and true freshman Baron Goodman (Nansemond-Suffolk) is a reserve offensive lineman for the Tribe.

Old Dominion men’s basketball squad (5-1) heads into CAA play off a 77-70 win over Richmond (6-2) Wednesday night in Norfolk. The Monarchs travel to Delaware to play Saturday at 7 p.m. ODU’s the defending season and tournament champion in the Colonial.

Sophomore forward Nick Wright (Nansemond River) is averaging 8.7 minutes, 2.2 points and 1.5 rebounds a game for the Monarchs.
