Winthrop tops ACC foe

Winthrop’s men’s basketball squad had mixed results Monday and Tuesday in the consolation round of the NIT Season Tip-Off in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Winthrop junior Andre Jones (Nansemond River) scored 15 points in the Eagles’ 83-74 win over Wake Forest Monday night in Winston-Salem, N.C. It was Winthrop’s first win in seven meetings against the Demon Deacons. Jones is averaging 9.6 points a game for the Eagles (2-3).

The Eagles (2-3) beat their ACC host, Wake Forest, 83-74 on Monday before being routed 71-44 by Belmont Tuesday.

In the win over the Demon Deacons, guard Andre Jones (Nansemond River) scored 15 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the field. Jones is starting as a shooting guard for the Eagles. Winthrop was 0-6 against Wake Forest, and it was Winthrop’s fourth win over an ACC school in the last nine years.

For the season, Jones is averaging 9.6 points per game and 4.4 rebounds per games. Jones has made 5 of 11 three-pointers.

Old Dominion won the Paradise Jam Monday night with a 67-58 win over Xavier in the final game in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Xavier was a Sweet 16 team in last year’s NCAA Tournament.

Sophomore forward Nick Wright (Nansemond River) played in all three games in the tourney for the Monarchs (4-1) and added eight points in a 61-60 win over Clemson.

The Monarchs return home and host Richmond on Wednesday night.

Marquette narrowly fell to two ranked opponents in a pair of nationally-televised games Monday and Tuesday in the CBE Classic in Kansas City, Mo.

The Golden Eagles pushed the defending national champs, No. 1 Duke, in a 82-77 contest. Marquette trailed by double digits and rallied to tie the game at three spots during the second half.

Marquette freshman forward Davante Gardner (King’s Fork) had nine points and four boards in 15 minutes while battling a shoulder injury.

No. 18 Gonzaga beat Marquette 66-63 in the third-place game. Gardner played seven minutes against the Bulldogs.

Marquette (4-2) returns to Wisconsin and faces UW-Milwaukee on Saturday.

Ball State (2-1) is spending Thanksgiving in Anchorage, Alaska in the eight-team Great Alaska Shootout.

The Cardinals play the Big East’s St. John’s in the first round Wednesday night (Thursday at 2 a.m. Eastern time), then has games Friday and Saturday.

Freshman Jay Copeland (King’s Fork) is a forward for the Cardinals and has gotten playing time each of BSU’s three games.

Washington and Lee senior Brandon Wilder (Nansemond-Suffolk) finished second in the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:57.23 in a three-team swimming meet on Nov. 13. Wilder also has a victory in the 200 butterfly (2:04.11) to his credit from a meet earlier this season.

Washington and Lee is 5-3 this season.
