The Lakeland Cavaliers recovered from their disappointing homecoming loss last week with a 56-7 rout of host Great Bridge on Friday night.

And the dominated on both sides of the line of scrimmage.

“It was a little of both,” Cavaliers head coach Glenwood Ferebee said. “We played a complete game tonight, so that’s what makes me happy.”

On defense, Lakeland picked off freshman quarterback Jacob Wilson three times, all resulting in touchdowns. Sophomore defensive back Convon’Tra Revell and senior defensive back Derrick Edghill scored in the first half, and senior defensive back Antonio Jefferson closed out the Cavs’ scoring with his pick in the second.

On offense, senior quarterback Zach Super went 12 for 17 passing for 224 yards and three touchdowns, while senior running back Raekwon Johnson carried the ball 10 times for 170 yards and two touchdowns.

“I figured we would be dominant,” Ferebee said. “We’re trying to get better each game, and I think we took a step forward in doing that this week.”

Lakeland was almost too efficient for its own good. With the Cavs leading 56-0 in the third quarter, Ferebee kept his offensive starters in for some much-needed conditioning.

“The referees started throwing penalties every time we’d get a good play,” he said.

Ferebee said the perspective was that Lakeland was trying to run up the score on a weaker opponent, but he assured that this was not the case.

“There wasn’t a point where I was trying to run up the score up,” he said. “My kids needed the work. We had three interceptions for touchdowns, so the offense barely played. So it was just trying to get some extra work for the guys, but I ended up taking them out with about five minutes to go in the third quarter.”

Lakeland (5-3, 4-3) travels to play Indian River (3-5, 3-4) on Friday.
