Local organizations are putting the word out to make sure all those who are in need this Thanksgiving can have dinner on the table.

A food giveaway, sponsored by Impact Suffolk and supported by its 30 member churches and other organizations, will be held Saturday morning at the Howard Mast tennis courts behind Farm Fresh, 1401 N. Main St. Nobody will be required to fill out income sheets or give any other proof that they are in need of food, Impact Suffolk director Dot Dalton said.

“This is between them and God,” she said. “We can’t judge. The needy is who we want.”

The organization has reached out to the Suffolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority, Social Services, Western Tidewater Community Services Board, Western Tidewater Free Clinic and Salvation Army to alert those in need that food will be available, Dalton said.

“We just want those people to know that there is going to be food,” she said. “We want to make sure that those people get the word.”

Food available includes green beans, corn, peas, sweet potatoes, stuffing, rice, mixed vegetables, bread and coffee, as well as a limited number of chickens.

“I would tell people to definitely get there before 9 o’clock,” Dalton said. “We will open the lines before 9 o’clock, and they will move quickly.”

Police will be on hand to direct traffic, Dalton said.

Impact Suffolk sponsors the food giveaway as a holiday ministry, Dalton said.

“I’m getting so many phone calls,” she said, adding her phone has been ringing “continuously” this week.
