The 35th annual Peanut Festival offered more than just rides, games and greasy food — it offered an opportunity for festival goers and volunteers to give back.

Volunteers raised $1,450 for the American Cancer Society throughout the event. The volunteers carted a mobile, pink toilet throughout the festival grounds during the four days of the festival and offered visitors the chance to win a prize by sinking a bean bag into the bowl.

Two festival volunteers shaved their heads in exchange for donations to the American Cancer Society, festival chairman Joe Patterson said.

“’Flushing Out Cancer’ is a humorous and memorable way to attract attention and donations for a worthwhile cause,” he said.

Those in need of blood donations also benefited, as the American Red Cross collected 20 pints of blood during a blood drive on Friday at the festival.

“I always knew our Peanut Fest volunteers cared about our community, but each year they amaze me with their love of Suffolk and their dedication to helping those in need,” said Lisa Key, executive director of Suffolk Festivals Inc.

But it wasn’t just charitable causes that won at the festival — several individuals and organizations placed during contests held during the festival and its kickoff parade.
