King’s Fork alum Davante Gardner made quite a debut with Marquette’s basketball team in a pair of wins this weekend in Milwaukee, Wis.

In a 97-58 rout over Prairie View A&M, Gardner totaled 17 points, five rebounds and two blocks in 13 minutes. Gardner, a 6-foot-8 freshman forward, was 7-for-7 on field goal attempts and 3-for-3 at the foul line.

In Marquette’s 72-61 win over Bucknell Sunday, Gardner had 11 points and seven boards in 12 minutes as a reserve. Bucknell led 57-45 before a 24-0 Golden Eagle run. A tip-in basket by Gardner put Marquette ahead 58-57.

In an Associated Press article on Sunday’s game, Marquette head coach Buzz Williams said, “when you give (Gardner) the ball, he kind of lights up like, ‘I know what to do with it.’”

“I have a whole lot of confidence in myself. I never get nervous,” Gardner said. “I just go out there and play my game.”

Marquette (2-0) hosts Green Bay Wednesday at 9 p.m.

Mount Olive edged Chowan 56-55 in the women’s basketball opener for both schools Saturday at Chowan.

Chowan junior Ransheda Jennings (King’s Fork) scored a three-point play with 0:20 to put the Lady Hawks ahead 55-54.

Mount Olive’s Jasmine Whitley hit the game-winning shot with 0:08 left.

Sophomore Andrea Jones (Nansemond River) had 10 points and two assists for Mount Olive.

Jennings had 20 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Mount Olive hosts Catawba Saturday. Chowan travels to Georgia for a tournament Friday and Saturday.

Apprentice’s men’s basketball squad went 2-1 in its weekend travels through Maine. The Builders beat Southern Maine 78-66, beat Central Maine 77-60 and lost 77-74 to Maine-Fort Kent.

Freshman guard Latrone Demiel (Nansemond River) scored 12 points in the win over Central Maine and 11 against Maine-Fort Kent. Freshman Steve Woods (Lakeland) averaged 6.0 points and 4.3 rebounds per game on the trip.

The Builders play at Virginia State Saturday.

Christopher Newport men’s soccer team bowed out in the second round of the NCAA Div. 3 Tournament Saturday in Newport News.

The Captains beat Neumann 3-0 Friday before falling 2-1 in double overtime to Johns Hopkins. The Blue Jays scored the winning goal on a free kick in the 102nd minute. CNU was ranked No. 2 in the nation.

Junior defender Trevor Moyer (Nansemond River) played in 20 matches and started 18 for the Captains.

CNU (20-2-1) had the best record in program history.

Hampden-Sydney defeated Randolph-Macon 31-28 in the 116th playing of “The Game” at Hampden-Sydney Saturday. The Tigers (9-1) win the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and a spot into the NCAA Div. 3 Tournament.

RMC senior cornerback Mark Jackson (Nansemond River) had four tackles and a pass break-up in his last game as a Yellow Jacket.

The Yellow Jackets finish 7-3 for their fourth consecutive winning season.
