Even on Christmas, diners served

Looking to save a bit of holiday stress this year? Then, maybe you should consider starting a new Christmas dinner tradition — eating out.
Suffolk residents who don’t want the hassle of cooking Christmas dinner — or who want to grab a bite before heading home to wait for Santa — need look no further than some of their favorite local restaurants.
“We’ve been open on Christmas and Christmas Eve for years,” said Lisa Carr, manager of Baron’s Pub. “We usually do pretty well. All kinds of people come in.”
Customers can include those who are burned out from a long trip, folks who cooked earlier or are looking to grab a drink or people for whom a big dinner is not a holiday tradition.
Fortunately for all of those groups, there will be open restaurants of all types to choose from on Christmas Even and on Christmas.
“We’re open because we are from China and our big day is the Chinese New Year. So, we’ll celebrate then,” said Candice Zheng, owner of Iron Chef. “People are going out and eating on Christmas. We’ll be open for business.”
Zheng said business for them isn’t too busy, “but it’s busy enough for us to stay open.”
While some restaurants have been opening on the holiday for years, others are looking to get in on the holiday action.
“We’re in the service industry, and Christmas is on a weekend this year,” said Richard Katz, owner of Cogan’s Pizza. “We’re closed for Christmas Eve, but we open at 5 p.m. on Christmas. It’s the first time Christmas has been on weekend in a long time, and three new movies are opening this weekend — and we’re right next to a movie theatre.”
Both Cogan’s and Baron’s Pub said they expect a lot of people with out-of-town families to wander in, looking for a good drink and a place to hang out.
After all, no one should be alone for the holidays.
