Nansemond River extended its win streak with a 20-7 homecoming victory over Great Bridge on Friday night.

The Warriors (4-3, 3-3) had dropped three straight district games after a season-opening blowout victory against Wilson. Now, they have recovered with three straight district wins, but they had to overcome some initial homecoming blues to do it.

“It felt like we came out a little flat,” Warriors head coach Tracey Parker Sr. said. “It showed early on.”

The Warriors were able to score early, but the Wildcats responded late in the first half to knot the score at 7-7 going into the break.

“We had to make some corrections defensively and had a much better defensive second half,” Parker said.

Nansemond River was also able to score twice more.

They were led by junior running back Latrell “Vegas” Sandifer, who had 31 carries for 196 yards and a touchdown.

“We fought, and I’m proud of the kids of the way they fought, hung in there, and enabled them to get over those homecoming blues,” Parker said.

Next Friday, Nansemond River will go to Western Branch to face a Bruins team fresh off its second consecutive loss of the season.
