A Suffolk man heads into the second day of the Virginia State Golf Association Mid-Amateur Championship tournament in Salem with a score of 80, putting him 19 strokes behind the leader.
Brian Jeltema shot 38-42-80 on the par-71 Hidden Valley Country Club course on Friday. He was set to tee off at 8:57 a.m. Saturday in the second round.
Leading all golfers was 30-year-old Matt Chandler of Hardy, who set a blistering pace in forgiving conditions with his 10-under-par round of 61, the lowest single round ever recorded by an amateur in VSGA stroke-play competition.
Hardy’s round also was believed to have matched the lowest score in relation to par in a VSGA amateur tournament and was the lowest tournament round ever recorded at Hidden Valley.
