Nansemond-Suffolk senior Margaret Davies hits a spike against Bishop Sullivan Catholic Tuesday at NSA. The Lady Saints won 25-8, 25-19, 25-11 for their sixth straight win.

Nansemond-Suffolk’s girls volleyball team swept Bishop Sullivan Catholic, 25-8, 25-19, 25-11, for its sixth straight win Tuesday night at NSA.

It was senior night for three Lady Saints, Taylor Neuburg, Margaret Davies and Kelsie Halberg, but likely not the final home match.

The win moved the Lady Saints (14-7, 6-2) closer to a top-four seed, and a first-round home match, in the Tidewater Conference Tournament. The latest Virginia Independent Schools (Div. 2) state poll has NSA at No. 6, giving the Lady Saints an outside chance at still getting into the top four and hosting a state tournament quarterfinal.

NSA had no problem against the Lady Crusaders with the exception of one stretch midway through the second set. Head coach Robyn Ross was able to play all 12 of her players for significant periods of the match.

“I think anytime everyone on a team gets a lot of playing time, it boosts morale, players gain experience playing next to new players,” Ross said.

Behind strong serving by Halberg and Quinby Hines, the Lady Saints moved out to a 7-1 lead to start the match.

Hines and Halberg split the team’s setting duties at the start of the season. For most of the season though, Hines has become the primary setter and Halberg is a hitter. Hines totaled 21 assists and Halberg scored 10 kills. The two combined for 11 of NSA’s 16 aces Tuesday.

NSA led comfortably in the second set before BSC rallied to tie it at 18-18. The Lady Saints stopped the rally there. A block by Morgan Daughtry, followed by a Hines ace, made it 22-18 NSA. Hines kept serving to a 24-18 lead.

NSA jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the third set and cruised from there.

The Lady Saints finish the regular season Thursday at Greenbrier Christian. NSA would clinch at least the No. 3 seed for the TCIS tourney with a win.
