TaShauna “Sugar” Rodgers (King’s Fork) scored a game-high 17 points and added four assists for Georgetown in its 72-57 win against Clemson Wednesday in Washington, D.C. The win gave Georgetown (11-2) 10 straight victories heading into the Big East Conference opener on Saturday at Syracuse.

Rodgers has led the Lady Hoyas in scoring in nine games this season and has been the Big East Rookie of the Week twice. Georgetown is 3-0 against ACC schools this season.

Cincinnati’s men’s basketball team earned a key victory on Wednesday in Cincinnati, defeating No. 10 Connecticut 71-69 in overtime to start Big East play.

The Bearcats (9-3, 1-0) played at Rutgers on Saturday night, then host Pittsburgh Monday at 7 p.m., which will be televised on ESPN.

True freshman Jaquon Parker (King’s Fork) is averaging 9.8 minutes, 3.0 points and 2.6 rebounds per game as a reserve point guard for the Bearcats.

Averett’s men’s basketball squad split games on Tuesday and Wednesday at an invitational tournament at Hampden-Sydney College.

The Cougars (3-7) lost 69-64 to St. Mary’s (Md.), then defeated John Jay 76-57. Sophomore Kenny Hart (Nansemond River) scored 14 points versus St. Mary’s and had 15 points and five assists against John Jay. Sophomore Ruben Pierce (Nansemond River) had six points and four rebounds Tuesday, then six points, three assists and three rebounds Wednesday.

Chowan’s women’s basketball team routed Apprentice School 85-57 in Newport News on Wednesday.

Sophomore guard Ransheda Jennings (King’s Fork) contributed 12 points and six assists in the Lady Hawk win. Jennings is averaging 12.3 points and 3.1 assists per game.

Chowan (4-6, 2-4 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) played St. Paul’s Saturday and hosts Elizabeth City State Monday in Murfreesboro, N.C.

Mount Olive freshman Andrea Jones (Nansemond River) is one of the best long-range shooters in NCAA Div. II so far this season.

As of the NCAA’s last official report, Jones was shooting 55.0 percent from three-point range, good for ninth in the nation. Jones is currently averaging 6.6 points and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 45.8 percent (11-of-24) from three-point range.

Mount Olive is 3-4 overall and 2-0 in the Carolinas Conference after league wins at St. Andrew’s and at Limestone.
