Lake Prince Woods retirement community will be a host site for the International Council on Active Aging’s annual health promotion week Sept. 23-29.
The public is invited to attend three days of events focusing on a variety of activities promoting good physical health and exploring new areas of interest.
The special events begin Monday at 10:15 a.m., when participants will learn that exercise comes in a variety of different formats, including line dancing. A line-dancing class will prove that exercise can be fun and easy, and you don’t have to have any previous dance experience to enjoy it. It incorporates aspects of jazz, country, disco and swing.
At 11 a.m., there will be a china painting demonstration with Susie Tuberson, Lyn Snyder and Jean Hoyniak. They have been china painters for more than 20 years and will demonstrate this craft on a variety of objects. Lunch, consisting of soup and a sandwich, will be available for $5.
Special events will continue on Wednesday at 9 a.m. with Zumba Gold. Zumba Gold is a spin-off of Zumba that addresses the exercise needs of older adults. It incorporates the same zesty Latin music and easy-to-follow moves of regular Zumba.
A balance class will be held at 10 a.m. This easy-to-follow class focuses on your core muscles and posture with strengthening and toning exercises.
There will be a genealogy class at 11 a.m. to introduce participants to the basics of beginning genealogy research and provide them with material to get started. Lunch, consisting of soup and a sandwich, will be available for $5.
The special week of events wraps up on Sept. 28, beginning at 9:30 a.m., with chair yoga, a gentle, relaxing exercise that improves muscle tone and flexibility.
At 10:45 a.m., there will be a Camera Club program. Be sure to bring your camera. An expert photographer will give a brief talk, and then participants will go outside to do some camera work and come back for a brief critique. Lunch, consisting of soup and a sandwich, will be available for $5.
Advance registration is requested by Sept. 21 by calling Susan Stone, director of development and public relations, at 923-5511 or by emailing her at sstone@uchas.org.
