Council retreat this week

The Suffolk City Council will hold its annual retreat Thursday and Friday at the Health and Human Services Building, 135 Hall Ave.

The theme is “Building on Progress,” and topics up for discussion include almost every aspect of running the city — economic development, public safety, transportation, capital improvements, quality of life, solid waste disposal and more.

The retreat is open to the public. The schedule is below.

Thursday

  • 8:30 to 9 a.m. — Working breakfast
  • 9 to 9:30 a.m. — Welcome, agenda review and video
  • 9:30 to 11 a.m. — Economic development, public safety and financial accomplishments
  • 11 to 11:15 a.m. — Break
  • 11:15 a.m. to noon — Transportation topics including Virginia Regional Transit initiatives, railroad quiet zones, Nansemond Parkway widening project, U.S. Route 460 update and roadway reserve fund
  • Noon to 12:30 p.m. — Public safety displays
  • 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. — Lunch break
  • 1:15 to 2:30 p.m. — Capital Improvements Plan update, including utility improvements, police storage facility, municipal center and police headquarters expansion and central library and downtown redevelopment
  • 2:30 to 2:45 p.m. — Break
  • 2:45 to 3:45 p.m. — CIP continued, including Whaleyville Community Center, Bennett’s Creek Park Recreation Center and other parks projects
  • 3:45 to 4:15 p.m. — Assessor update
  • 4:15 to 5 p.m. — Quality of life, including parks and Social Services
  • 5 p.m. — Day 1 wrap-up

Friday

  • 8:30 to 9 a.m. — Working breakfast
  • 9 to 10:15 a.m. — Official City Council meetings – City Attorney
  • 10:15 to 10:30 a.m. — Break
  • 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. — Legislative plans and agenda
  • 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. — Lunch break
  • 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. — Comprehensive Plan update and Solid Waste
  • 1:30 to 1:45 p.m. — Break
  • 1:45 to 2:30 p.m. — Recap and wrap-up
